    Stag history

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have recently received my heritage certificate and was quite surprised. It seems that my 1974 automatic left the factory with a factory fitted option of overdrive. It would appear that the engine number has changed also, so I assume at some stage someone has changed that together with the gearbox. Interested now in finding history and what else changed? Diff?

Can anyone tell me how I approach the DVLA to find previous owners? Has anyone done this and what reception did they get?

    Thanks

    Tim,

According to your entry in the triumphstag.net registry the commission number for your car ends in 'O'. This is the suffix for 'overdrive'. Non-overdrive cars had no suffix, auto cars had a 'BW' or 'A'suffix. This is what has caused some owners problems with teh first of their new style MOTs, as the DVLA computer won't recognise the letter 'O' in a VIN and your registration document (V5C), like mine, will have it entered as a number '0'.

I got details of former owners of my car many years ago. If I remember rightly they charged me a nominal sum for photocopies of the change of ownership slips from the bottom of the V5.

Youcan find details on their website (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...cle/DG_4022067)

      Thanks Dave,

This has got me really confused. My diff seems to be correct for an auto, and I've run it against my mates manual with o/d to check readings. Mystery, but no use worrying. I'm happy and that's all that matters.

Hi there - I have sent away for vehicle ownership history in the past - it only costs £5.00 and you receive photocopies of all old logbook (V5) certificates with change of ownership etc. Visit the DVLA website and follow the links - you have to be the registered keeper of the vehicle (i.e. the name on the V5) but its fairly simple and quick - I researched an old MGB and received the info within a few days.

        Good luck

Hi Tim, I did the same as Raymondo and sent for details of my Stag a couple of years ago. Same cost and copies of old log books but took about 6 weeks if memory is correct.Still haven't tried to contact previous owners though.

I guy I was speaking to a few years ago, bought theStag that he wanted but changed it from man o/d to auto, because that was what he had always wanted. Maybe the same was done with yours.

            Hi Tim,

I did exactly as you described - i contacted the DVLA with a cheque for £5 and within two or three weeks received photocopies of the old V5's and info about the supplying dealer and even the salesmans name.

So, armed with this infoI did a web search through BT's records to try and trace the previous owners and for the cost of a few stamps and a letter received replies from all the previous owners, except the first. It seems that along the way i made an old man very happy as with the help of his daughter he recounted some of the journeys and events that heundertook whilst in his ownership. I also received loads of photographsshowing the part restoration that someone did and aphoto showing that at one stage it was fitted with under bumper spot or fog lights. So that's accountedfor the green lamp fitted on the dashboard !

I've got to say it was an exercise thatreally paid off !

              Tim,

Diff was the same for manual and auto - 3.7:1, although several owners have said that this is undergeared for the auto. Surprisingly I have never driven an auto Stag, must get out more!

Thanks for help. Form printed, signed and on it's way to DVLA. Should be an interesting exercise, will post when I have anything interesting.

                  Dear Mr Mathers

Nice to see the good side of your Stag! need to ditch the spurious vehicle in the background though! Rivit Rivit!

                  Bye for now:P

Still on the question of history...but on a slightly different theme................

It does appear that at some stage my engine has changed...........not uncommon.

However, it is sooooooo difficult to read the number. The rear of the block, just next to the gearbox housing, has a number, but I'm blowed if I can read it. It's not filed off, but very very difficult to read.

Anyone know any way to enhance the stamping? Apart from getting the guys from CSI round I'm stumped.

                      Tim,

Have you tried brushing white paint over it, then wiping off with a rag?

A2 - Your right - the dodgy looking vehicle in the background has now gone ! andI'm hoping that I'm going to have 2 good sides later next week !!

Then all I need to do is attack both the floorpans/bootlid/windscreen pillars/under the rear wing where it meets the floorpans/ the junction of the cills and the rear wing....not to mention replacing the cream crackeredhood frame and those are just the body bitsthat I'm aware of.!

And on top of that Mr Brown wants me to pay more for my road tax !!

Good job I've got the wife back to work ! :-)
