    car tax changes

    It has been reported on the news that this weeks budget will see a steep rise in road tax for so called gaz guzzlers too as much as £400.00 per year.

    Does anyone know if us with a stag built after 1ST Jan 1973 will be included in this, as technically we produce more co2 than a new range rover!

    more co2 mile for mile than a range rover butmy stag isinsured for 5k per year unlike the company range rover doing 30k !!!!!

    i bet alot more of us will have a winter lay up if this does hit our stags.

      I can't see Brown offering any exemptions. I wouldn't be surprised if he introduces something to effectively get rid of the pre-72 zero rated road fund licence at some point to.

        I believe the amount of CO2 produced is directly based on the amount of fuel used. As most classic car owners use their cars sparingly it wouldn’t seem fair to apply a standard tax for just owning the car. Stags are probably not the most environmentally friendly of the classics but will generally cover fewer miles in a year than a modern Ranger Rover.



        On a similar note, I recently read an article that Edinburgh has plans to ban cars over 10 years old from the city. This may seem radical but I can see something along these lines coming into affect for other cities, possibly linked to congestion charging – any thoughts?

          I heard that 2/3rds of a cars emissions are generated when making it, extracting the steel from ore, shippingetc, so whats the problem? Lets ban new cars, especially as less & less are made in the UK now, with no British car companies left (except Morgan &London Cab people)in part, thanks to the same government trying to make you buy new cars from the continent, adding to the UKs tradedeficitresulting in an increase in tax to pay for it!

          Round we go again....:?

          ......and another thing where is this 'green' tax going? It should be used to plant trees or something to help offset the effects of CO2 emmisions, but no its just another tax.:shock:

                New member - picking up my MkII Stag on Saturday! Counting down the hours to be honest. Have found out the following from Mr B's budget.

                Budget Policy Decisions (p.220), Environmental and Transport Taxes, Vehicle Excise Duty (A.91). '... Rates for C-E, pre-2001 cars and vans, and post-2001 vans will rise by £5 in each of the next three years...'

                It appears (unless I'm mistaken) that the Stag is safe for the time being! Now to continue the campaign to re-align the tax-exempt threshold on classic cars.

                  Only cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 have taxation rates based on emissions.

                  Cars registered before then have a standard "across the board" tax cost, whichis now£180.00 for 12 months or £99.00 for 6 months. This covers any car over 1549cc.

                  Those lucky enough to have a Stag constructed before 1st Jan 1973 still get free tax!
