Rear crankcase oil seal

Hi All

I am going to attempt a change of the rear crankcase oil seal very soon on my 1972 mk 1 stag.

Can anyone give me any tips to what sort of trouble it will be and before I commence is there any where in that area other than the above where the leak may be coming from.(replaced oil transfer housing seals already)

Apart from removing the gearbox, clutch and flywheel, then replacing them again, there should be no problems at all! :?

The actual oil seal fits in a removable carrier. This is held onto the block by 6 bolts, plus another 2 from the sump pan. Centralise the seal carrier on the crankshaft and secure it to the block, then insert the 2 from below. Check crankshaft for wear where the seal contacts. This should be smooth and any ridges taken out. The seal provided by the Stag suppliers(143148) is generally red in colour. I needed one in a hurry recently and went tomy local branch of B.S.L., taking my old seal with me. They gave me one the same size, but which was black and had a double seal surface. It was more expensive at about £12 against £5 from the Stag suppliers, but it should seal better and last longer .

At least I hope it does or I will be a bit p****d if I have to drop the box again :X.

Other potential sources for leaks? I have heard of small oil leaks from the back end of heads, but not seen it myself. Otherwise there is the cam cover gaskets and rear 'D' seals. Oil from here can find its way down the back of the block.

Hi, I fitted one two years ago, and it failed. I think its worth checking the part before fitting to see thats its not damaged or perished with age. I wont moan about the particular supplier, they keep these things untested for years on the shelf, perhaps its a common fault, i wonder if anyone else has a good source of supply of the seals?
