    Smoking Stag

Had a strange one tonight in my car when coming home from work.I was in slow moving traffic and as it cleared I pulled away and I though I saw smokein the rear view mirror, however after a minute or two it disappeared.

Came onto the motorway all was fine 70 MPH car was driving perfect. Oil and temp are spot on where they are always. Motorway was fine.

I then turned off and had to break hard at a junction. There was a large white cloud of smokecame from under the car from the area of the front wheel and or by the drivers door.Once I pulled away from the function all was again fine all the way home. What could be causing a clear white smoke with no smell.

I checked the water level at home and all is perfect. The only think that I did was last night to top up the automatic transmission fluid level. Was wondering if I had maybe overfilled this and it could be coming out of the filler tubeonto the exhaust and evaporating into the white cloud.

If my guess is true, would the smoke be white and without odor?

I am really confused as to what this is.

    Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Steve, I think you're right, the only things I know of that will produce white smoke, are ATF and brake fluid. Check the level and stop worrying Martin. PS, did you check the ATF level with the engine just off, or had it had time to cool ?

It was not hot. When I filled it with my funnel it did not all go in and it was quite high on the filler tube when I insertedthe dip stick. So probably it is this.If it had been oil I would of smelt it for sure burning on the exhaust. Once had a leak from oth eoil pressuresender that used to stink when it dripped on the exhaust. Was expecting the auto gearbox oil would also smell being oil

I always struggle with the filling of the auto fluid. When it is hot, it is difficult to see if the fluid is correct. I always see it on the bulb at the bottom of the stick but when it is cold it is always up on the spring on the auto dip stick.

I am always paranoid of nto enough oil in the gearbox as well

Hi Steve, there is a non-return valve in the torque converter, but they're famous for failing, so when cold the level appears to go up. ATF leaks are common, and to be lived with, but they rarely do more than drip a bit on the garage floor.
When I dip it, it's always almost clear, so agree with you about checking being difficult. I think it does smell, but nothing like engine oil, being thin and clean it all burns off. Enjoy the old girl, I'm chuffed to read that you use your Stag for work. Martin.
